Ask JC science students about the most feared subject, the answer is likely to be Physics. No surprise, really. Compared to other science subjects, Physics is the most conceptual by a mile! At the Cambridge International Examination (9646 or 9702) level, those Physics exam questions typically require higher order thinking. Passing Physics, let alone acing it, is no walk in the park!
For students who have grown up on a staple diet of traditional didactic teaching and rote learning by memorizing formulae, JC Physics presents a huge challenge. Quite a lot of JC students have simply given up on the subject. Many of them would be over the moon if they could score a “B” in Physics.
Starting from 2017, the JC Physics will no longer have school based practical exams (15% weightage). Instead, students will be taking a Cambridge Physics practical exam. Many JCs are uncomfortable with this new arrangement because they cannot prepare their students as thoroughly for practical exams as before. From 2017, JC students can no longer bank on the 15% weightage in practical exams to pass JC Physics. It is anticipated that come 2017, the grades for Physics will plummet across all JCs.
